Jesup

Jesup grew up around a junction of two railroads in 1869 and became the county seat in 1873. Amtrak’s Silver Meteor stops at the restored 1899 depot on Broad Street, and Arch Fest and Train Day fill downtown each October. RYAM’s cellulose plant and research center are here, and paper manufacturing is a big source of local jobs.

Odum and Screven

Odum began as a sawmill community on the railroad, named in 1887 for landowner Godfrey Odum. US 341 is its Main Street, and the Odum Day Festival comes each October. Screven, on US 84 southwest of Jesup, dates to the railroad’s arrival in 1857, and its elementary school still uses buildings from 1922. Lake Lindsay Grace lies between the two.

The homes

Across the county, a good share of the housing has been built since 2000, much of it in newer developments in the pine woods. In Jesup itself, most homes are older detached houses, and out in the county manufactured homes make up a large share. Land runs from wooded homesites to farm tracts and river land near the Altamaha.
