Baxley

Baxley grew up around a stop on the Macon and Brunswick Railroad and became the county seat in 1874. Caroline Miller wrote Lamb in His Bosom, the 1934 Pulitzer Prize winner, while living here briefly. Today US 1 and US 341 cross in town, with Appling Healthcare and a Coastal Pines Technical College campus, and fall Fridays mean Pirates football.

Beyond Baxley

Outside Baxley, the county is farms and pine woods. Loggers once rafted timber down the Altamaha to the sawmills at Darien, and the river still runs along the northern edge. Plant Hatch, Georgia’s first nuclear plant, sits on its banks north of town, and Moody Forest protects old-growth longleaf pine, with trails, a boat ramp and canoe access.

The homes

In Baxley, most homes are detached houses, older and more recent, with some apartments and a real share of manufactured homes. Out in the county, manufactured homes are even more common, and homes sit on farms, wooded homesites and country roads. Cropland, pasture, pecan orchards and pine timber make up much of the land.
