The countryside

Outside Alma, Bacon County is fields and forest. Blueberry farms line the county roads alongside row crops, poultry and planted pine, and the whole county sits inside the Vidalia onion growing area too. The woods and fields hold deer, quail and dove, and the small crossroads communities are mostly farms and homes on large lots.

The homes

In Alma you will find older in-town homes, brick ranches on big lots, some newer houses on the edges of town and a share of fixer-uppers. Out in the county it is farmhouses, homes on several acres, and farm and timber tracts, including established blueberry farms.

What to check before you offer

Inside or outside AlmaInside Alma, ask whether the home is on city water and sewer. Out in the county, have the well and septic checked.

Near the Satilla and its creeksMost of the county drains to the Satilla River, and creeks and bottomland run through a lot of tracts. Check drainage and the flood zone before you offer.

Blueberry farms and timberOn a blueberry farm, ask about the age and variety of the plants, the irrigation and any agreements with buyers or packers. Timber tracts need a look at soil and access.

Homes that need workAlma has its share of fixer-uppers. Get an inspection, then weigh the repairs against what similar homes have sold for before you make an offer.

Questions

Bacon County FAQ

What towns are in Bacon County, GA?

Alma is the county seat and Bacon County's only incorporated city. The rest of the county is farms, timber and small rural communities, with Alma as the hub for school, shopping and the hospital. Our work here covers in-town Alma homes, rural homes on acreage, farmland and timber.

Why is Alma called Georgia's Blueberry Capital?

Bacon County has grown blueberries commercially since the early 1970s and is still the center of Georgia's blueberry crop, according to the festival's organizers. The University of Georgia runs a blueberry research farm in the county, and the Georgia Blueberry Festival has celebrated the harvest in Alma since 1974.

Which school district serves Bacon County?

The Bacon County School System, based in Alma, serves the whole county with a primary school, an elementary school, a middle school and Bacon County High School. Coastal Pines Technical College has an Alma campus, and Georgia's Move On When Ready program lets high school students take college courses there for dual credit.

Can I buy a blueberry farm or farmland in Bacon County?

Yes, farmland here often means blueberries. An established blueberry farm raises its own questions: the age and variety of the plants, irrigation, and any agreements with buyers or packers. Timber tracts, pasture and homesites come up too, and all need checks on access, soil and flood zones.
