Liberty County at a glance

Fort Stewart, colonial Midway and the coast

Liberty County is home to Fort Stewart. In 1940 the federal government bought a large part of the county’s north side for the post, and Hinesville grew up alongside it.

Hinesville, the county seat, has newer subdivisions and a short drive to post, and Walthourville sits on its southern edge. Out east along US 17 and I-95, Midway and Riceboro are older coastal communities with colonial history, tidal creeks and quicker access to Savannah and Brunswick.

Hinesville

Hinesville is the county seat, on the south side of Fort Stewart, and the Army sets the rhythm here. Soldiers and civilians arrive and leave on orders, so many buyers shop from another duty station. Downtown has Bradwell Park and a Thursday evening farmers market from March to November, and Bryant Commons has a pond, an amphitheater and a dog park.

Midway, Riceboro and Walthourville

Midway, at I-95 Exit 76, was settled in the 1750s in St. John’s Parish, the first in Georgia to vote for liberty, which gave the county its name. Riceboro, the county seat before Hinesville, has a public boat landing and fishing pier on US 17. Walthourville, on Hinesville’s southern edge, has a new subdivision and a state bypass connector being built through town.

The homes

Hinesville has more subdivisions and newer homes than the smaller towns, plus apartment communities. Walthourville adds new construction next to older houses on bigger lots. Midway and Riceboro mix older homes, rural lots and homes near the marsh, and the coast has condominiums facing the Intracoastal Waterway. Beyond the towns are homesites, timber tracts and hunting land.
